World’s Hottest Chilli Pepper

The Carolina Reaper is known to be the world’s hottest chilli pepper according to the Guinness World Records. This pepper is so hot that it has the ability to put a person in the hospital. In fact, a man who participated in a chili-eating contest a few years back experienced the intense side effects of the Carolina Reaper.

A few days after the contest, the contestant started to experience intense headaches and neck pain. As days went on and the side effects became more extreme, he sought medical attention because he was worried about possible neurological issues.

While in care, it was found that the Carolina Reaper pepper was the reason that this man was in so much pain. Based on a past BBC News article, “the doctor who reviewed his case has warned anyone eating hot chilli peppers to seek medical attention immediately if they experience sudden onset headaches.”

More specifically, headaches are known as thunderclap headaches. These are ones that “are caused by the sudden tightening of the vessels that supply blood to the brain, a condition known as reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome (RCSV),” according to BBC News. RCSV can take days or weeks to clear up on its own.

Thankfully, the contestant was able to grow out of his symptoms and his body was able to adjust back to normal.
