While we all like to think of ourselves as a real-life Sleeping Beauty, truth be told, there’s really only so much we can sleep, even if we had all the time in the world. And of course, most of us don’t look all that beautiful while asleep either, but that’s beside the point.
But for a seventeen-year-old Colombian girl, she’s actually been diagnosed with Sleeping Beauty syndrome – a highly rare condition that she’s been dealing with. The syndrome is actually known as Kleine-Levin syndrome, and the girl, Sharik Tovar has been suffering from it from the young age of just two years old.
The condition is so rare that there have been only 40 cases ever reported, and those that suffer from it have episodes of excessive sleep, as well as changes in their behavior and cognitive functioning. For Sharik, her episodes can last as much as two months, meaning she sleeps for an entire two months straight.
Her mother, who reported the case to authorities, has also been struggling to help her daughter, as she has to liquefy her daughter’s good and feed her on an hourly basis.
Sharik’s mother had to quit her job in order to care for her daughter, and is in desperate need of assistance from the authorities, but has yet to receive the help that she needs to get by.
If this wasn’t already difficult enough, Sharik also suffers from memory loss. The cause of this rare syndrome is still unknown and unfortunately, there is no cure for now.
