While the rest of us wait all year long for events such as the World Cup and the Super Bowl, Filipinos are dedicated to a different kind of competition. That would be the beauty pageant.
Despite the fact that it’s popularity is fading elsewhere, Filipinos remain devoted to pageantry. Especially so with the country’s beauty queen’s getting international awards from all directions, The Philippines is the nation of beauty pageants.
Filipinos across the world gather together annually to watch the Miss Universe competition. The three other major pageants include Miss Earth, Miss International and Miss World. These four events are known as the Big Four of beauty pageants.
Throughout history, the Philippines has taken the crown an entire 14 times, four for Miss Earth, six for Miss International, one for Miss World, and three for Miss Universe.
The Philippines has also, pretty much without any break always made it into the top 10 at the least. The country’s love of beauty pageants date back to many, many years ago and is seriously passionate. In 1908, the Manila Carnival was held as a search for the Carnival Queen, and from there it quickly became one of the most popular events. Today, pageantry appears to have become a part of Filipino blood.
Perhaps one of the reasons is that they are so good at it. Further, it also gives them a great sense of national pride, especially after being a country that have suffered centuries of colonial rule. The pageantry gives Philippines a well deserved sense of victory. Whatever the reason may be, it’s a ton of fun to watch.
