Counterterrorism Machine Learning

For too many years already, content that supports and promotes terrorism has been much too successful and prominent on platforms such as Twitter and Facebook, as well as other social media platforms.

The fight against it has been a never ending fight that has forced tech companies to hire specialists and open war rooms.  Facebook is now one of the companies that has found methods to deal with this in the best way possible: machine learning.

Facebook, in a blog post, recently announced that it will be using machine learning technology in order to recognize content that may be related to support of groups such as al-Qaeda or ISIS.

They have created a special algorithm that gives each post a score, based on it’s potential of violating the counterterrorism policies of Facebook.

Any post that crosses a certain score will be immediately removed without any human involvement or moderation.  However, Facebook has shared that there is unfortunately no perfect system, at least not yet, that can fully ensure that terrorism will be completely banned from Facebook.

Nonetheless, it’s a step in the right direction.
