Converted Religions: Celebrity Edition

When one decides to covert religions that is a very personal choice. With that being said, it comes to a huge surprise to find out which our favorite celebrities have converted to a new religion (some even multiple times). Some wait to convert until they are married but others do it for trauma or personal desires. Here are a list of the hottest celebrities who have converted religions at one point in the course of their lifetime.

 

Albert Einstein

Converted from Judaism to Agnosticism

 

Einstein is famous for saying, “I have repeatedly said that in my opinion, the idea of a personal god is a childlike one.” In a 1930 essay Einstein penned “Religion and Science,” he distinguished three human impulses which develop religious belief: fear, social or moral concerns.” Ultimately, Einstein did not believe in a personal God who concerns himself with the fate of human beings. He described this view as naïve.

 

 

Madonna

Converted from Catholicism to Judaism 

 

The famous singer was raised Roman Catholic before she converted to Kabbalah in 1996. But more recently, Madonna has revealed to friends that she does not identify as Jewish. She has said that she does not like to affiliate herself with any specific religion. Instead, Madonna likes to connect with the spiritual rituals of different religions.

 

Bob Marley

Converted from Rastafarian to the Ethiopian Orthodox Church

 

Musical and cultural legend Bob Marley was a devout Rastafarian, a Christian-influenced, personal religion with many subgroups and a flexible set of beliefs revolving around the ritual use of recreational substances and that Africa was God’s favored land. Towards the end of his life, Marlet converted and was baptized into the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.

 

 

Katie Holmes

Converted from Catholicism to Scientology

 

Holmes was raised Catholic, but she converted to Scientology a few months after she and Tom Cruise started dating back in 2005. She described the practice as being very exciting. There were elements of Scientology in the couple’s Italian wedding. When she divorced from Cruise in 2012, she also split from the Church of Scientology.

 

Drew Barrymore

The world-famous actress married Will Kopelman back in 2012 in a Jewish ceremony. “It’s a beautiful faith and I’m so honored to be around it. It’s so family-oriented,” she said during a 2013 appearance on The View. Barrymore even raised her daughter according to the Jewish religion.

 

 

Julia Roberts

The Oscar-winning actress was born to a Catholic couple. She was filming Eat, Pray, Love, in India in 2009. During her time there, it’s been suggested that was when Roberts found Hindusim. She now attends the temple in Los Angeles along with her husband and children.

 

Tom Cruise

Converted from Catholicism to Scientology

 

Tom Cruise is an outspoken advocate for the Church of Scientology. Scientology is opposed to mainstream psychiatry, which Cruise has taken up publicly. Back in 2004, he made the controversial statement, “I think psychiatry should be outlawed.” He even verbally attacked actress Brooke Shields back in 2003. Shields was taking an anti-depressant to recover from postpartum depression, which Cruise asserted that there is no such thing.

 

 

Jack Black

Thomas Jacob Black was raised in a Jewish household. The actor and comedian’s mother was Jewish by birth and his father converted. However, Black considers himself to be an atheist. He revealed in an interview with NPR that he doesn’t have any real spiritual beliefs in his life.

 

Ice Cube

O’Shea Jackson’s previous religion is pretty unclear and its been speculated if he actually had followed one. Ice Cube became a Muslim after having converted in the 1990s. He is a self-described mellow Muslim, though in his younger days he did promote the Nation of Islam.

The actor had a life-changing experience as a teenager in Hawaii after an interaction he had with a stranger. “He was like, ‘I stopped because Jesus told me to stop and talk to you. He said to tell you you’re destined for great things.’ My friends came out, and I was like, ‘Hey, I’m gonna go with this guy.’ I gave my soul to Jesus within, like, two days. I was stuffing envelopes for his organization, Jews for Jesus.'”

 

Marilyn Monroe

Golden Globe-winning actress Marilyn Monroe wed her third and final husband, playwright Arthur Miller, in a home Jewish ceremony. Miller was a secular Jew and did not expect Marilyn to convert.

Converted from Scientology to Buddhism 

 

Stone had a brief interest in the Church of Scientology after which she became a Buddhist. She’s explained that she believes in God, not Buddha as God. Buddhism for Stone is a way of life than a belief in a deity. Stone went under some heat after an earthquake in China that killed 68,000 people. She publicly pointed to bad karma taking its payment on China and its policies toward the Buddhist state of Tibet.
