Cannons Are an Example of Indie Pop at Its Best

Many first came across Cannons when their hit song Fire For You was featured on the eighth episode of Netflix’s Never Have I Ever. One cannot deny that the song’s soft rhythm and hypnotic vocals are captivating. Case in point: The song reached the No. 1 spot on the Hollywood Reporter’s Top TV Songs chart during May of 2020. Since then, the Cannons have slowly gained more popularity with their dreamy, indie-pop aesthetic, which some might describe as similar to Tame Impala or Sex After Cigarettes. If you haven’t heard of them yet, keep reading for a short introduction.

Formed in 2013, the L.A. band includes Michelle Joy, who joined forces with childhood friends, Ryan Clapham and Paul Davis, after answering an ad the two published on Craigslist seeking a lead vocalist. From then on, the keyboard-bassist duo became a trio known as Cannons. They released their first EP, Up All Night in 2014, debuted their first album Night Drive in 2017, and later released their sophomore album Shadows in 2019. Their dreamy, ethereal, spellbinding, sexy, entrancing sound is packaged into a perfect delivery of 80’/90’s synth/electro/indie pop. However, don’t let the “drenched in melody grooves” (taken from the band’s Twitter bio) distract you from their evocative lyrics. Their newest single Ruthless encapsulates the feeling of being “discarded” by an ex, in favor of someone new. This song is guaranteed to get you into your feelings.

The band also brings their unique sound into their 2021 EP, Covers by Cannons, by putting their stamp on popular songs and making them their own. In fact, you have never heard the Kings of Leon’s Sex on Fire quite like this before. The Cannons are currently touring with lovelytheband and Sir Sly. If you want to experience their magical, whimsical sound first hand, you can check out the dates and purchase tickets for a show on the band’s official website.
