Nations across the globe have constantly been trying to have the world’s fastest supercomputer. After a long period where China took dominance, the United States has now taken over with the Summit.
The Summit is a highly impressive and remarkable work. It’s located in Tennessee at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and holds the world record for the fastest supercomputer, at 200 quadrillion calculations a second.
The previous holder of this record was China’s Sunway TaihuLight which ran at 125 quadrillion calculations a second. Summit has proven some seriously jaw-dropping engineering.
This is not only exciting for America, but will also hopefully help solve some major medical issues, such as finding new treatments for addiction or Alzheimer’s disease. It’s also the first of it’s kind that can work together with artificial intelligence.
Summit is specially designed to answer questions that human beings would not even think to program into a computer system. It’s learning capabilities could be trained to go through medical data and find causes of signs or diseases that were never before seen.
