It was two years ago when Timothee Chalamet showed up at the 2019 Golden Globes red carpet wearing a black suit with a black, shiny harness (needless to say, he pulled it off, effortlessly). It was an unforgettable red carpet moment: The unconventional look broke the internet and sparked conversation. So how did this somewhat polarizing piece of attire suddenly become a full-on trend?
Well, it didn’t take long for other celebrities to adopt the harness into their own red carpet appearances, proving Chalalmet certainly wasn’t the only one who could make a bold fashion statement. Michael B. Jordan wore a colorful cross-body harness to the 2019 SAG awards over a dark blue suit. Lil Nas X was seen wearing a vibrant pink harness as part of a cowboy-inspired outfit. Chadwick Boseman also dared to wear a cream-colored harness over a white suit. The harness was then spotted on fashion runways in the following fall/winter season. However, while it was the male harnesses that rocked this trend on red carpets, it was women who were showcasing it with their catwalks. Balmain, Alexander McQueen, Vera Wang and Gucci all incorporated the harness to their designs and made it high fashion. The harness was mostly used to accessorize various dresses on the runway.

However, can this slightly confusing trend translate to an off runway/red carpet look? The answer is yes, of course, but it must be done right. Pair it with a maxi dress or even under a blazer so it won’t stand out too much if you are still on the fence with this one. Don’t be afraid to step out of your fashion comfort zone and experiment with this edgy trend!
