When you first look at softball, you may think that it is similar to baseball. Now you aren’t completely wrong. However, there are a few key differences in this sport. For starters there is a difference in the distance between bases (baseball having the larger distance), then there is a slight difference in the ball that is used, softballs are larger and heavier than baseballs. They are also played by slightly different rules such that softball has unlimited outs. In baseball, you only get four outs per inning, and if you don’t make it out of the inning, the next batter comes up.

Here are the much-needed basics to get you started. Softball is played on a field with a ball and a bat. You have nine players on each side of the field, arranged in three lines: first base, second base, and third base. There are two bases—home plate and foul territory—and they both start at home plate. All nine players begin on one team’s end of the field. Each team has nine innings before switching sides in order to play another nine innings. In order to win the game, a team has to have more runs than its competitor. That’s just a short introduction to this great sport.
